Frequently asked questions about FUE Method

  • Is FUE the best method for hair transplants ?

Is FUE the best method for hair transplants ?

Both FUE and FUT are very effective hair transplant methods. There are pros and cons of both which you should discuss with your Moorgate Patient Co-ordinator. The FUE method tends to be selected by those who don’t want the linear scar associated with the FUT technique.

  • Is it right that I have to have my head shaved ?

Is it right that I have to have my head shaved ?

Yes, the head is shaved prior to the procedure. This is perhaps once reason that most choose FUT. If you work in an office for example you will have to go back to work with very short hair at first. The head is shaved because the follicles are taken individually rather than in a strip.

  • Does FUE hurt ?

Tell me about the scar at the back of the head ?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. In most cases you may be given a light sedative too. After the local anaesthetic has been given the procedure is well tolerated by most Patients. Many actually fall asleep during the procedure

  • How long does an FUE take ?

How long does an FUE take ?

Several hours are required for an FUE procedure. This is because the hair is taken individually and this demands a lot of the surgeon. In the FUT technique the surgeons team cut the strip between them. With FUE it’s the surgeon who has to take each follicle individually, hence the long time in the chair.

  • How many grafts can be done at once ?

How many grafts can be done at once ?

It is possible to perform around 2000 FUE grafts in one session, but not much more than that. We have to consider the comfort of the Patient and the best chance of good growth rate from the transplanted grafts.

  • I hear FUE can be great for the hairline ?

I hear FUE can be great for the hairline ?

It is possible to transplant single hairs into the hairline if required. This can give an ultra natural look to the hairline

  • Why does it cost more than FUT ?

Why does it cost more than FUT ?

Simply because of the time involved in the procedure.

  • How much Time off work after FUE ?

How much time off work after FUE ?

Allow a few days off work to recover. You will have swelling and the area of the donor and recipient site will be sore. Don’t forget that your head will have been shaved so if this is a problem allow more time off work to allow for some growth.

Frequently asked questions about FUT Method

  • Why is FUT method cheaper than FUE ?

Why is FUT method cheaper than FUE ?

Follicular unit transplants are cheaper than FUE. ( follicular unit extractions ) because it is a faster procedure.  This means there is less time in the treatment rooms and the transplant team take less time to complete your treatment. Perhaps this is why it remains the most common hair transplant procedure today.

  • How many grafts can I have in one session ?

How many grafts can I have in one session ?

Generally speaking up to 3500 grafts can be transplanted in one session. A good team of technicians and in sufficient numbers is vital for these amounts. Compare that to around 2000 maximum for FUE procedures you can see why it is the procedure of choice for most.

  • Tell me about the scar at the back of the head ?

Tell me about the scar at the back of the head ?

With F.U,T there is a line scar at the back of the head. This is because the donor hair is taken in the form of a strip ( hence it is often called “ The Strip Method “ ). This usually heals to a fine line scar. Your barber will see it when he cuts your new hair , but providing you don’t wear your hair ultra short, nobody else will see it.

  • Will the FUT grafts look natural ?

    Will FUT grafts look natural?

Yes. FUT grafts look very natural even at the hair line. Remember the difference between FUT and FUE is only the way the hair is harvested from the back of the head, they are placed in the recipient area in the same way.

  • Does the donor hair grow at the back again ?

Does the donor hair grow at the back again ??

Because we take the roots it does not grow again at the back. This is why as part of your consultation we need to assess the quality and quantity of your donor hair. In theory you should have plenty to spare without leaving the back too sparse. The planning of a hair transplant is very important because its not just the hair you have lost now that we need to consider. We have to assume that you may need more hair transplants in the future, therefore we may need more donor hair.

  • When does the hair start to grow after FUT ?

How long do I take off work ?

Its best to allow a few days off work to recover. The scalp will feel sore at first and you may have some swelling. This is normal and settles within a few days for most.

  • Can I colour my new hair ?

    Does hair transplant surgery hurt?

You will be given a local anaesthetic during your hair transplant surgery. Some patients experience a degree of pain or discomfort in the days immediately following the surgery, but most recoveries are quick and relatively pain-free. We advise our patients to plan for a couple of days out of work to rest and recuperate following a procedure. You should also arrange for somebody to pick you up immediately after your transplant, as you must not drive after receiving anaesthetic.

Frequently asked questions about Hair Loss

  • I have started to lose my hair. Should I treat it now or wait until I have lost more ?

I have started to lose my hair. Should I treat it now or wait until I have lost more ?

We get asked this question a lot. Most experts agree that if you begin treating hair loss at the early stages then there is a better chance of slowing down the rate of any further loss. Growing hair back once it has gone is mostly the preserve of hair transplants. There are oral and topical treatments available that can be very effective in early stages of hair loss so the sooner you seek advice the better

  • My Dad is totally bald on top, will I go the same way ?

My Dad is totally bald on top, will I go the same way ?

This is not an absolute certainty by any means. With male pattern baldness we do look to the family history to give us an indication of where the hair loss may be heading, especially if left untreated, but its only a guide. Its not uncommon for Patients to tell us that they have siblings with full heads of hair whilst they are clearly losing theirs. If you have other characteristics of your Dad then this may be another telling factor.

  • I have been told I have alopecia Areata will my hair grow back ?

I have been told I have alopecia Areata will my hair grow back ?

This is a very specific hair loss condition where the hair falls out in patches. These patches can be totally denuded of hair. Experts say that it is caused by stress. Usually the hair grows back on its own accord. In worst cases the hair on the entire body can be lost ( alopecia Universalis ). In some cases the hair does not grow back at all.

  • I am totally bald on top. Will medication grow it all back ?

I am totally bald on top. Will medication grow it all back ?

Whilst medication such as minoxidil and finesteride may provide some improvement it is unlikely to restore a full head of hair on a man suffering from full male pattern baldness. Consider a hair transplant.

  • Does washing my hair too much make it fall out ?

Does washing my hair too much make it fall out ?

No. Use a good quality shampoo suited to your hair type and be gentle with your hair when it is wet. Take special care when using hairdryers and styling aids so that you don’t damage your hair

  • Can my medicines make my hair fall out ?

Can my medicines make my hair fall out ?

Some medicines and drugs can cause hair loss. You must not stop taking a medication that has been prescribed to you because you think its making your hair fall out. See your Doctor if you think your medication is causing hair loss.
